Pope Francis makes his first public appearance in five weeks before leaving Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

The Vatican has shared in a video message that Pope Francis has passed away.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced on the Vatican's Telegram channel that the first Latin American Pope of the Roman Catholic Church passed away at 7:35am (05:35 GMT) on Monday at the age of 88.

During his 12-year papacy, Francis battled multiple health issues, with his condition worsening in recent weeks due to a severe case of double pneumonia that kept him hospitalized for five weeks.

He passed away just a day after making a short appearance before thousands of Catholic pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Vatican’s outdoor Easter Sunday Mass.
